“La cumparsita” (from “comparsa” carnival) is a tango written in 1916 by the Uruguayan musician Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, with lyrics by Pascual Contursi and Enrique Pedro Maroni. It is among the most famous and recognizable tangos of all time. Roberto Firpo, director and pianist of the orchestra that premiered the song, added parts of his tangos “La gaucha Manuela” and “Curda completa” to Matos’ carnival march (“La cumparsita”), resulting in “La cumparsita” as it is currently known.”

Johnstone’s preparation for 4 solo cellos is based and then revised from the string quartet version of Arturo Hernández. It can be considered a medium to hard cello quartet – only more advanced players will probably be able to convey the energy and vigour in the bowing hand needed to pull this off well! However, the left-hand positions are not especially difficult, although thumb position competence is certainly required for Cello 1.

“La Cumparsita” (“The little parade”) is undoubtedly the most widespread tango, the one that every person recognizes apart from its version, the one used as an icon to represent the whole genre. It was initially a little march, composed by the young student of architecture, Gerardo Hernán Matos Rodríguez on an uncertain date, that we can place between the late 1915 and the early 1916, for the carnival marching band organized by the Federation of Students of Uruguay.
